Tesla Smart Summon: Does It Actually Work?

Publicado el 30 sep 2019
Tesla software 10.0 just dropped and includes a ton of new features like access to Spotify, playing games like Cuphead and the new Smart Summon feature. Smart summon allows the car to come to you on its own depending on where you are. Question is, how well does it work?

  • Why do i feel like there would be an article titled: Florida man hit by his own Tesla car when using smart summon, and is now suing Tesla.

    • Florida man usually isn't from Florida.

    • Damn he summoned the car to the court

    • Why Florida? Lol

    • 3 months later Florida man back at it

    • 3 months later Florida man back at it

  • I really hope the security is impenetrable. Imagine hackers controlling your car?

    • @Antonio Circiumaru just like watchdogs

    • Watch Dogs: Legion

    • That s actually scary imagine spying everywhere you go and even take yourself to their base locking the doors its really unsecure for me

  • 2:54 You earned my freaking like!! I think I speak for everyone when I say we don't want you to get in legal trouble, but... our curiosity wouldn't have been satisfied if you ended the experiment there.

  • Imagine 50 teslas trying to find their owner on a parking

    • Lol Must be using a iPhone with AT&T service 😩😩😩 like no 📶📶📲📲

    • mohamad 😂😂😂💯💯💯

    • Nikolaos Tsoulos oh no 😂😂

  • Imagine being a boomer and seeing a car driving down the road at your local walmart without a driver

    • Knight rider music plays in head

    • As a boomer I resemble that remark.

    • Most Tesla Model S owners are 'boomers' actually. 95% of the people driving them I've seen have been in their 50s and 60s bc they are the people who can afford them

    • lmao xD

  • GREAT video! Maybe when the car is pulling out at 1mph and you are in motion while coming into the frame, it presumes you will also exit the frame. It's not expecting you to be screwing with it. Or maybe it trusts you to have enough sense to get out of the way [eventually]. But still this is great to see! It's like yesterday's future is here today!

  • The comment about the car being like a teenage driver is pretty accurate. That's exactly how AI learns. More experience makes a better driver.

  • This is soooo cool!!!!!Regardless if it works perfectly or not yet. Shout out to the engineers and the people that came before them for making this possible!!

  • My mom: don’t run in the parking lot UAC:alright run in front of the car to see if it hits you

    • that's the only reason I'd have children to see if my smart car decides not to hit them hahaha

    • Seems to me, this car is smarter than many people tho !

    • 😂😂😂

    • Michael Lane lol 😂

    • Lmao

  • The amount of image processing and real time data it would take to detect, for an autonomous system is mind boggling, machine learning and other stuffs going on pretty smooth but yeah though I respect it as an engineer definitely not satisfied as a customer.

  • Now you all know how we felt when the personal computer first came out. Some things worked well some didn't and crashed. We could see the potential but were frustrated like he is here when the car didn't see the runner in time. It is amazing to be here to witness this new innovation in it's infancy. In a couple of years this will look like a joke video. But for now, it's all brand new! Happy New Year 2020 everyone!! 😁🍻

    • Ok but this isn't a computer. It's a car. It needs to work pretty much perfectly, every time, or people could die.

  • I really like this you did a very good job of showing it off and testing it I really hope because this is the first version of "come to me" that like a video game or website that Tesla will see this and work on an update to make it more feasible and better and detecting people/cars/parking spots.

  • "average consumer" Owns a top tier Tesla

    • What tesla did this guy use in the video?

    • It’s not just for rich people. Anyone can own a Tesla if you can afford it.

    • @Haruka Inuyama - I could access ESmain in a public library. Someone being able to access ESmain on an electronic device does not make them middle class. I have worked with people experiencing homelessness that have cell phones and access ESmain through public WIFI. What you mentioned is not an example of a middle-class background.

    • @Nuno Filipe I don't know, I've never been to America.

    • Dont know but just keep talking like you are in my shoes. If you want more points, sure i can give yall

  • If someone says “Hey Siri, summon Tesla” The biggest flex since the AirPods

    • Summoning jutsu

    • I don’t know if that will happen or not, it would be a bit unsafe, right?

    • They should increase the range like I'm miles away and I can summon the car when I need it

    • Since when were $150 pair of AirPods a flex? LMAO

    • @Will Reese Google's on it, and it's almost complete.

  • Pure video man! You did all the tests I would have done.. Thanks! Enjoyed it a lot.

  • This is literally like a blind person moving using only their other senses.

  • It should have a horn and lights warning before leaving parking spot to warn others. Like a car alarm when using remote to activate it and it should be loud to make a person or animal aware what's happening.

  • Wow! What a pretty car. I just bought my Model S in October of this year, and I just tried my Summon mode a few minutes ago. It didn't work at first, and then it did. I'm going to need to practice, LOL! Thanks for a nice video and a really cool looking car.

  • Imagine being asleep in your friends car and the car starts driving without a driver

    • That was the nightmare that I kept having as a child. I tried to break or stop the car, but that just made it go faster.

    • PLELELSLAKSLALSKELE E

    • That friend will be cleaning the interior of urine stains.

    • You can't have friends and a Tesla I learned this the hard way

    • That would be scary

  • I checked in because I’ve never used the feature. Your presentation was very thorough and honest. I’ll try it out but will also incorporate your recommendations. Thank you.

  • That was still in a very early state, so smart summon is a real nice feature, but needs better orientation, fast reaction and much longer ways to be allowed.

  • I can tell this is an older Tesla 2012 or 2013 maybe 2014. Cool to see they were able to make the software update on the older models still. Which may explain the weird maneuvers over the lines

  • There's probably a reason why it ignores the lines. My thought is when the engineer designed it it was with a common sense approach. If there's a car there, avoid. If nothing is there at all, you can drive through it. I think also this the learning curve all of humanity will have to go through learning to trust their car technology. It works but you have to have faith in the process.

  • Karl out here putting his life on the line.

    • @grunt98311 lol

    • @Moha YC Just the error prone carbon based life forms who still have to pay attention to what the car is doing

    • Little Cripple The main character is Carl Johnson, so yeah

    • @Pasta_Nick nigga is over sweet

    • Karl is the real MVP

  • When it isn't working with obstacles just imagine when someone is driving from the parking space and he is passing by. Would it stop? Sometimes a driver sees running car and stops but then the other vehicle let him through & he resumes driving. I bet it would smash right into this vehicle.

  • one of my biggest flags is how it pulled out of the spaces when it wasn't having to back out. granted, every time it was a straight drive out, there was no cars to either side, but noticing how it cranks hard to the direction it wants to go, vs pulling out of the spot before it starts turning would worry me, especially with how kinda wonky the software is acting. really cool though, i hardly understand the tech so my comment is only made as an uneducated viewer.

  • Based on watching this video I'm almost positive that the car was going exactly where your phone is so I feel like if you stood out in the center of the road waiting for your car your car would stay on point as opposed to pulling across the parking spot lines because it's going straight to you where you were off in a parking spot yourself

  • It seems to turn sharply when backing or pulling out of a space. I would like to see it tested with a car parked on both sides of it while it moves out of the parking place. Also I am concerned that if you were further in a store would it start to come in the store too? If it is raining you would be in the store summoning it. So would it come on the side walk? Also would rain, snow, etc. change how it reacts to people, cars, or whatever is in its way? Would rain itself interfere?

  • Someone: steals your car and brings it home Tesla: I'ma head out

    • @Russ Dahlberg HAHAHAHAHAHA that's not going to work, here is a better idea. Build a Metal Mesh Faraday cage. Very big, very complex, very refined and very expensive for a Car Sized Faraday Cage. Might as well just BUY a Model 3.

    • @Neojhun thanks imma do that

    • @KillerBaum someone steals your tesla and as they are parked somewhere you control it with your phone and have it drive back to your place.

    • @Neojhun Just wrap it in foil, kill the wireless range. done.

    • @Neojhun you have to set phasers to stun

  • I can't get over how quiet these things are!!! I mean, yeah cars have gotten better at sound manipulation, but to have a real silent car is MIND BLOWING.

  • If someone steals your phone, will get the car too... 😂

    • @Richard держу в курсе

    • @Некит Скиф держи в курсе

    • @Richard держу в курсе

    • @Некит Скиф держи в курсе

    • No if you're not so dumb to have a phone without password at all, after all, password pickup may took years

  • Is it just me that thinks that for an AVERAGE CONSUMER (such as myself) he sure does have a lot of dough to buy a Tesla

  • I didn’t know about this feature. I legit can’t believe it ! 😳 Even though it looks sloppy still at this point it blows my mind regardless.

  • Imagine a Cop pulling over your tesla and seeing nobody in it

    • Ever seen Knight Rider?

    • “Third time this week”

    • The video before this one the cop seen it run a stop sign in a parking lot. Pulled car over and was stunned at lack of driver. Owner was standing watching laughing for awhile at first. No ticket given, cop was amused.

    • TjGoCrazy I’ll be walking home that day

    • Sneak 100

  • Mine will drive on public roads when I do the 'Come to me' mode. I have a 2018 Model X. I have used it in some really busy mall parking lots with moving cars and people everywhere. Amazing how well it worked but I was a bit nervous.

  • For fairly new software, it's not bad and does what it's advertised to do. I'm sure Elon and Tesla are working on getting its safety and efficiency up in the months to come (detecting people and cars who aren't paying attention, detecting the lines in an empty parking space, etc).

  • I know this has been out for a while, but when it was driving I feel like it was more thinking you were on a curb, why it was ignoring/not sensing the parking spots, trying to get to the curb it probably senses, the software definitely has some upgrades needed to more accurately sense where it is, and to be able to figure out the parking lot lines. It also seemed like it was taking to sharp of turns while getting out of the parking space, and I don’t know if it would behave the same if cars were parked next to it, but if it does the same you’d be getting a lot scratches. And the civilian walking or if it was a car also needs to be fine tuned, cause there were many times that it was to close for comfort and for all of that the sensors in it should be able to detect that

  • It seems like it hugs the side to give it room in case other drivers pull out fast like they usually do. Because it does adjust when there are cars nearby.

  • The feature is a good step forward, hope Tesla improves on it to where the car can detect more around!

    • Aaron Zhang it works he was just scared

    • @LilBits I meant in the future when the cars are good enough to drive themselves and be taxis. Then theres no difference legally between the car picking you up or picking up a customer, and that would be legsl

    • Little Cripple you’d actually still get hit with a DWI if your car gets stopped by the cops. By the looks of the cat can’t even stay away from solid lines so I’d never trust it. Needs to be better but good start I guess. Hears to wishing it gets better soon and they pass this stuff on to other cars devs.

    • @Bitchute is better than ESmain don't think it's illegal to drink and have it take you home but if it makes like, tons of progress and drives like a human being or even better it'll be nice to have the car as the mate that takes u home when u are drinking:)

    • Getting to your location having the car park itself, then doing your thing and telling your car to come get you is what im hoping for. Especially save me effort when im drinking and needing a lift home

  • It'd be great if it could get better at coming to you if it's a place it's familiar with. Like if you've called it to come to you 20 times in around the same location, it would've learned the better routs and driver cleaner on the way. Like a A.I learning from its mistakes.

  • Always amazed at how beautiful that front end looks! Plus the blue trim is cool too.

  • I wonder how the car responds in the rain or when the sensors get dirty, would it still detect obstacles correctly?

  • This technology is still in it's infancy stage. Give it another 20 years and they really will be self-driving cars.

  • *stranger:* hey what are you doing? *tesla owner:* *_ahh just takin my car for a walk_*

    • Lvl 99. MaximiliunMus Soldier just started watching max again oh yeah yeah

    • Wow I'm done you got me

    • Weird flex but ok

    • Love that Ha ha

    • Wrong. A tesla owner would never refer to it as 'a car'. They gotta remind everyone they drive a tesla. They're like vegans.

  • When your GPS glitches and your car is suddenly halfway on its way to Santa Clause.

  • It’s so cool. When I’m on my property I can open my garages which are quite far away and it can pull out and come to me on my roads. It is actually amazing

  • I am wondering if it’s a good idea to even get the optional full auto drive features at this point. If you wait and have the auto drive features installed after Tesla irons out the wrinkles. If your an early adopter and your Tesla has self drive hardware from 3 years ago, that’s old already. I want a Tesla model 3 and when I do, I will probably wait till Tesla proves their self drive features are nearly fool proof before installing it. It may cost more but at least it will be a lot safer.

  • I'm not preferring this option. I have a GPS from Costco that detects lane departure, moving traffic and gives collision warnings with one single camera. I would expect this car with multiple cameras, radar and superior tech to be more sensitive and reactive and not drive across the parking lot lines.

  • Imagine you're leaving a mall and it's suddenly raining and everyone is running to their car but you just wait at the entrance for your car to come to you.

    • @A R no, idiot it wont hit anything

    • U can then ride it into the mall

    • In my country a lot of people do that. It is called car with driver, people just call their drivers.

    • Thats the future right there.

    • A Crucial Gamer well you clearly don't know tesla if you're saying give it 2 3 years.. maybe if it was a bmw or a mercedes with tesla.. give it 4-5 months and it will be perfect. People forget this is beta mode

  • Looked like it cut the corner rather than pulling out first before turning, since you weren’t pulling out between two close parked cars it didn’t show how the car would handle them . I think not hitting cars that your car seemed headed towards was ok, you could walk between the vehicles with the gap that they left, not regarding the end of the line is no biggie ....

  • Really liked this review. You might say it's not scientific, but this is the exact environment this car is gonna find itself in. In other words - Tesla testing wasn't any good.

  • I think at the speed this car is moving your cousin could take the bump. Id like to see if it would really make contact or if the contact interaction is based on the speed of the car? At 1 mph it will stop on a dime. I also think since its not seeing the parking lines its trying to stay on its side of the road and is looking for the curb. Thats what it looks like to me.

  • This is real good quality info here. Thank you.

  • Needed Update: Don’t adjust the specific drawn router for the car to make it a faster summon, instead make the path more (EXTREMELY) specific so the car will stay on a certain route but still be able to check for pedestrians and traffic and scan if an intersection to know it if is clear to go. Elon is doing great but safety beats timing every time. Just my opinion. And yes I know it’s just a beta and there are more updates to come.

  • I'm furious that they didn't name it special summon

  • I wonder what would Tesla do if the car crashes into something while performing this feature? Would they cover all the damage since it was all the car's fault?

  • Imagine Tesla building a living environment on mars and being like, “yeah it works”.

  • *“Sorry guys I can’t come tonight, my car is still updating”* - Rich people in 2019

    • It's going to give a whole new meaning to "the blue screen of death".

    • ehem..2021.. *cough*

    • @Bryan I *_only_* have a Maserati

    • What about the model 3 budget model.

    • 😭😭😭😭

  • Cars: *drive themselves* Human being: “Am I a joke to you?”

  • Try it in a lot where the side cars are closer to see if it cuts the corner of the space like it does when no cars are there. It seems to not be aware of the side space or the lane itself, using the wrong way. You need another car to see if it would make it with another car coming towards it. AH! Christmas shopping is coming up! Take it to the mall for a real test! He, he, he!

  • Awesome watching this tech evolve. Someday this will seem like a baby crawling, reminds me of the internet as a whole evolving into what it is today.

  • I had a chance to meet a bit about the valet function of the Tesla basically your car is like your smartphone it's learning as it does things so it may take it a couple of times to do something and sometimes it doesn't sometimes it just goes it knows it sees but yeah it's an awesome innovation

  • 2009 : I am playing with an RC Car 2019 : I am playing with a real Tesla

    • Asiful Islam hehe

    • ArdePiertje Can you help me with that?

    • Victor go frick urself

    • @VK dont be the grammar police.

    • an RC*

  • The smart summoning feature Should have a camera on the app itself so u can see what the car sees

  • Artificial Intelligence when the car almost hit the jogger: I don't see the problem

    • @BallHeadFreak because robots don't care about humans

    • Because he is black?

  • This video was awesome! Thanks for trying this out for me! 😂👏🏼 entertainment, too! Loved it!

  • We have Carl as the Person at Risk that made me laugh, it was a good term. The only thing I have to disagree with here is the assessment on the responsibility of the user in regards to the Automated driving feature. Tesla should not release a feature in the car that allows the car to self-drive via "Smart Driving" into the real world and it can't handle real-world situations. They are leaving too many untested and unanswered variables for this feature to safely used outside of a controlled and static environment. If this car makes contact with a person or another vehicle using this feature I can see this being a legal nightmare. Honestly, I would make sure to get it in writing from the insurance company that explicitly states they will cover you if anything was to happen while using this feature. Dope video overall though. I really enjoyed seeing the real-world testing. Glad Carl made it out ok! :-)

  • Me: presses summon button Car: *hits 5 kids and 7 cars and still parks 15 feet away from me*

    • @Montreal Johnson bro?

    • 🤣🤣

    • 🤣🤣

    • Just like GTA ambulance

    • imagine your friend stealing your phone as you are drunk and you are stood in the parking lot then you randomly end up chasing after your telsa that's being automatically controlled by your friend. that would be hilarious 😂 "later on the news a drunk guy chases after his tesla that's being automatically controlled as an audience of people on the street gather up to watch such a psychopath"

  • Seems to be operating within HUMAN norms, but we expect machines to be superior so it seems unsafe. I imagine it will become better overtime with user data being sent to Tesla.

  • The amount of data they must be gathering from this beta test has to be STAGGERING

  • I felt like the car was trying get to your direct location, where you were standing by the cars, that’s why it was going over the lines, but good testing. 👍🏾

  • Interesting, if you parked in a multi story would it detect you being at a higher/lower height than the car and drive down to you?

  • 2019: Tesla can drive itself 3019: Tesla can fly itself.

  • I trust the Tesla driving more than a human being

  • It's a beta feature... It's not 100% ready for a full-fledged production. It's still in the works and is using the data users send to Tesla to improve. It's not surprising at all that it's not perfect.

  • Let’s hope the Smart Summon is updated to detect parking space lines and be able to stay in the center

  • Since your only using it in parking spaces it should be safe enough to use it with people driving around it. This is only for parking spaces though because it can't tell if it is on the right side of the rode or if it can't go a certain direction.

  • Need a test where its parked in between 2 cars. Seems to always make a sharp turn when coming out.

  • It looks like it drives in a straight line towards you and only avoids obstructions. I'm wondering if it will stop for speed bumps

  • The summon feature makes me want to Tesla. After watching this video I think I'm going to give it a few more years.

  • This is amazing!!! Love the confidence you put there😂

  • I can just imagine the damage my 7 year old can do with my phone in his hand.

    • No lights, no water, no late night snacking. I agree

    • @MD HUSSAIN They should add FaceID or even just Touch ID support for iPhones.

    • Chef CJ Nobles u gotta do it u might regret it but at least u were brave

    • Don't Let Your 7 Year Old Have Your Phone Then. And Set A Password.

    • @WIZE we were also told not to sneak out of the house, go to a certain party, or eat sweets before dinner when we were younger but we did.

  • It kinda sucks you can’t use it on roads and it doesn’t notice the parking spaces but I definitely see why they don’t allow that yet thankfully with the “fleet learning “ it shouldn’t be too terribly long for this to greatly improve past this short comings as with most learning AI

  • I would love to see this tested in the rain when you are near a building and the car is in the parking lot.

  • Carl didn't have any faith In that car though He was scared af

  • Imagine trading 1 minute of walking for 5 minutes of stress praying you car isn't hitting anything.

    • Good start, there are still lot of chance for improvement.

    • Imagine trading 1 minute in searching with 5 minutes of minding your own business, talking with your friend, or wait in the ground floor, waiting for the car to come when it's raining

    • It's almost like it's a proof of concept and still needs r and d you idiot

    • @Blud Boy Rich people can just buy them, if not then buy people around you

    • its a better alternative if it's raining outside or very cold and u dont have a jacket.

  • Pretty cool feature concept, clearly needs to iterate

  • a public road is generally anything with an inlet/outlet with the purpose of through-traffic. normally you should never drive through a parking lot as a shortcut. it's also kind of defined as anything maintained by the government. like parking lots are owned by the entity they exist for, usually. you won't see government work crews resurfacing a 7-11 for example.

  • The driver seat is on the right so it ajusted it self so that you can get in the driver seat immediately

  • I think it is doing machine learning. Maybe It is collecting data from previous summons and correcting those errors.

  • The Tesla is driving as if it’s learning how to drive

    • Tesla become human

    • tis

    • I hope Elon Musk doesn't make Skynet

    • Everytime u take ur hand off the button, it sends them data that they study to know why you took your hand off.

    • It is

  • Nice thing about a Tesla is that its going to get better with more data and software updates.

  • I think car can detect the white parking lights, it crossed the white lights because car wanted to come closer to you(owner), and i think the detecting sensor is not covering all front area so it didnot detect the running man but this feature also learns with time I think

  • I think so far the summon feature is more for people that don't want to get out of bad parking situations like people parking too close to you, or if you pull in but hate backing up. things more like that right now. I'm sure eventually it'll be better for other stuff too

  • I love that your video get's right to the subject at hand.

  • It's definitely scary. But it will improve over time. New things like this just take awhile brother, great video though, nice to see the smart summon in action!

  • What kind of cosmetic upgrades have you put on your car? I really like how yours looks and might want to do some of them to my own.

  • Plot twist: Autodrive and the smart summon isn’t a real thing, they actually have thousands of workers just driving it from a computer
